The Locals

Yesterday I started the day off on top of our roof watching the locals go by. Being on the roof really gives one perspective as to how close we live to the locals, not to mention how close I live to the road. Which makes it a bit more surreal, if you get my drift.

After that we went to the ANA(Afghan National Army) to assist them in putting in a floor. It was more of a "show them how to build things right" mentoring thing than anything else. The day started with having to have some tea before work began. They have very basic carpentry skills, basics that I realise that I take for granted. Their captain showed them how to do things, he seems to be an educated man and very regal as the pictures can attest to. Then we had to sit down for lunch with them. Lunch consisted of rice, beef, potatoes and naan bread. The local fare is pretty tasty.

After the day was over they had invited us back to have supper with them. However since we arrived a bit later they had already eaten but had food for us. We were in the captain's and local commander's quarters. After we sat and spoke about the country and the impact of us being there. Some things were quite enlightening.
